Press conference for 1Biennale in Berlin
The first digital Bienniale for immersive interactive art, based on opensimulator goes real on September 17, 2018 in Berlin. It will be shown for the press and for artists attending the event in a closed session at KW Institute, Berlin. The public opening happens on September 20th at 1:00 PM PDT [22:00 Berlin time]. Avatars can reach the installation via hyperjump. The Biennale grid is native embedded in the Metropolis grid, but runs on its own dedicated servers by OVH Paris.
1Biennale was announced at OSCC17 by Art Blue. The following artists responded to the call and created Artist Cubes that have been placed in Pavilions on several landsets:
BETTY TUREAUD, BLUE TSUKI, CHERRY MANGA, ELLE THORKVELD, FREEWEE LING, GAIANED, GEM PREIZ, JADEYU FHANG, KERUPA FLOW, LAMPITHALER, LOUIS WU CYBERKLON, MOEWE WINKLER, MOLLY BLOOM, PAUL ATREIDES, PIPILOTTI WINSLET, RORY TORRANCE, SERAPH KEGEL, SH TUTTI, THOTH JANTZEN, TRYAD DESTINY, VAGABOND WANDERER, VENUS ADORED.
The Pavilions have been created by:
ART EAMES, BARRY RICHEZ, BETTY TUREAUD, BRYN OH, CICA GHOST, HYDE HACKL, PAUL ATREIDES & ERICO LECKER, SPACE CADET, UAN CERIAPTRIX, VENUS ADORED.
All landsets, in total nine, have been created by the co-curator of the Biennale Juliette Surreal-D.
Cherry Manga, well known as the driving force for the arts in Francogrid, has contributed the Cherry Tree for creating a GRAND OPENING landset. This landset, also made by Juliette Surreal-D features as a static set the Maskitt Pavilion by Bryn Oh with the artist cube Tea Time with Tutti by SecondHand Tutti and a dynamic set, the Pavilion MONDRIAN RECODED by Art Eames which recreates the first interactive art machine made by Herbert W. Franke in 1979 on a Texas Instruments TI 99/4. MONDRIAN gives home to a particle emitter machine MAGIC, created by Venus Adored. On a click you can become your own Visual Jockey. Also you will find a miniature on the land, the Chicken, by PatriciaAnne Daviau, the long time coordinator at Linden Endowment for the Arts. The miniature is hold by a statue made by Fushia Nightfire.
Art Blue has made a book LIVING IN A CODED WORLD showing the contributions; a collector’s item. He uses the blurb Layflat technology. It comes in a printing size of 11.8 x 11.8 inch [30 x 30 cm]. The book will be shown to the Press and the attending artists. 1Biennale will give awards for the best Pavilion and the Best Artist Cube through public voting. Art Blue will also give a Curator’s Choice Award. The bronze award statue created by Canadian Artist Bryn Oh, was first created in virtual and is named Long-Legged MASKITT.
Bryn Oh about the MASKITT:
“Essentially, the idea is that at our stage in development, we seem to be able to do amazing technological and genetic things but in some ways, we release these technologies faster than we control them.
The Long-Legged Maskitt is a genetically manipulated creature which stands a few stories tall and walks the polluted environments of the world where my narratives take place. They filter and feed on the polluted air through its gas mask mouth. Walking industrial cities and clean-up sites while slowly purifying.”
The public voting for the MASKITT Award will start September 20th and end October 30th, 2018. On November 1st the awards will be handed out at the Grand Opening of Santorini Biennale in Santorini, Greece. Santorini Biennale supports as the first of its kind Immersive Digital Art in a special category: IMMERSIVIA.
The Italian videographer WizardOz Chrome will show the 1Biennale contributions in a machinima in Santorini. At the Santorini Biennale in 2016 her machinima Surreal Cube was presented at the Grand Opening.
For artists, teachers and creative people interested in learning more about the opensimulator technology a workshop is offered. Art Eames, in real life Daniel Jung, working as a web-engineer in Berlin, will perform the session and give a behind the scene view. The team managed to create a web-based OAR loader so landsets can be changed by a mouse click via a webbrowser without giving access to the content database in Paris. The change of each landset takes less than 30 seconds. In this transition time the land is usually all water. But you don’t need even to stand in the water for so long. There comes SITTING ON A STICK out of the 1Biennale lab. Therefore Walking over Water by 30 Seconds to Mars might be played on the Hypergrid.radio to link to Santorini Biennale which has this year the motto NEIGHBOURHOOD.
Part of the sessions will be shared via SCREENLEAP, a browser technology used by ATIS.EDU which co-founded the project.
